Я мало пишу последнее время не потому, что не о чем писать, а потому что все темы, которыми хочется поделиться - про музыку. Не знаю, кому это интересно, но мне интересно, так что терпите.
Мой band class идет вовсю. Репертуар еще более шизофренический, чем в прошлый раз. Играем Вэйтсовскую Devil in the Hole - это одна из моих любимых песен вообще, но принес ее не я; оказывается это тема для модного телесериала Wire (только в другом исполнении). Я написал к ней аранжировку на три духовых (я, наш учитель - тенор-саксофон, и еще один чувак на баритон-саксе). Еще пообещал написать чарт для Don’t Get Me Wrong by Pretenders; вот эта запись пишется как рез вместо того чтобы этим заниматься. Еще играем Think Джеймса Брауна, Black Hole Sun, Lady Don’t Mind by Talking Heads (отличная песня, оказывается!), я принес Breakaway by Irma Thomas. Еще, Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar. Я когда-то видел книжку типа “написание хитов в стиле хард-рок для дураков” (эту?); похоже что песню и книжку написал один человек. Типа, verse-prechorus-chorus-bridge-verse-prechorus-chorus-[pump fist on the fadeout].
Как и в прошлый раз, интересная публика. Басисту сильно за семьдесят, он сказал что начал учиться играть когда ему было шестьдесят пять. Гитарист - весьма серьезный джазмен, которому почему-то с ужасным скрипом даются хард-роковые ритмы. В прошлый раз класс учил чувак, который в качестве основного занятия пишет музыку для видеоигр, а также снимает гитарные партии для Playstation Guitar Hero.
Еще прочел отличную статью про покойного Стэнли Каплана и стандартизованные тесты. Самое интересное начинается в четвертой части - про aptitude tests as means for social engineering, антисемитизм и т.д. Последние восемьдесят лет американская система образования была ориентирована на способности (aptitude) более чем на достижения - но вот наконец они начинают понимать что best predictor of achievement is past achievement, not aptitude. Походу замечу что для меня этот перекос оказался благом, т.к. тесты я всегда пишу очень хорошо, а по результатам ежедневной работы достижения у меня обычно средненькие.

По наводке mustt, почитал про фиктивную двадцать первую симфонию Мыколы Овсянико-Куликовского. В английской статье про нее нашел такую чудесную цитатку:
