Мы с младшим все время ходим в библиотеку, я беру себе книжки, а он - себе. И вот, за последние пару лет мы ознакомились со значительной частью детских полок. Книги он выбирает более-менее случайным образом, и я никогда не знаю что буду читать ему перед сном: комиксы про Iron Man-а, бессмертный труд “Пожарники тоже какают,” или что-нибудь из Кальдекоттовских призеров.
Самая потрясающая (никакого сарказма!) книга из всего мной виденного это Black and White by David Macaulay. Открывается она следующим предупреждением: Warning: This book appears to contain a number of stories that do not necessarily occur at the same time. Then again, it may contain only one story. In any event, careful inspection of both words and pictures is recommended.

Учoные (британские?) открыли что интервалы в речи человека ближе всего к натуральным обертонам, и поэтому just intonation is organic and kosher, а равномерно темперированные гаммы - которыми мы сейчас пользуемся - это, наоборот, антинародные выдумки вредителей.
…if the source of musical intervals is indeed the formant ratios in speech, then the present results are pertinent to the longstanding argument in music about which of several tuning systems is “natural.” In so far as the observations here inform this argument, the observed ratios in speech spectra accord most closely with a just intonation tuning system. Ten of the 12 intervals generated by the analysis of either English or Mandarin vowel spectra are those used in just intonation tuning, whereas 4 of the 12 match the Pythagorean tuning and only 1 of the 12 intervals matches those used in equal temperament.

Оттуда же: тональные языки коррелируют с аллелями генов ASPM и Microcephalin. Интересно что ASPM уже появлялся в исследованиях о языке - он также коррелирует с идиографическим письмом против алфавитного.
Хотя может быть он просто распространен у китайцев из-за founder effect? it probably correlates with chopstick usage too…
